The Heart of Sutherland is blessed with an abundance of wildlife. This is due in part to the virtually unspoilt nature of much of the countryside, the low level of human habitation and in part to the unique climates enjoyed by Scotland: northerly, yet made more temperate by the effects of the Gulf stream.

Sutherland has been described as one of the last great wildernesses in Europe, with its West coast of rugged cliffs, rocky inlets and sea lochs and on the east award winning beaches and nature reserves. However, its central and northern areas encompass a huge range of habitats from wide open plains, marshlands, estuaries and stunning highland scenery of rolling hills, inland lochs and spectacular views. This wildlife haven is ever changing with the turn of the seasons meaning resident species are joined by a variety of migratory visitors.
