Sutherland has a long tradition of exciting musical talent both traditional and innovative. There is a wealth of local talent both young and old playing traditional Scottish music at events throughout the area. There are informal music nights at The Achness Hotel, Rosehall on Wednesday evenings where anyone can come along and join in. Please check with the Achness Hotel or email CraicNGigs ( see below) during the shoulder months to make sure these sessions are taking place.
There are Ceilidhs - a concert with a variety of acts with song, music and dance held in village halls including Ardgay, Bonar Bridge, Clashmore, Invershin Hotel, Lairg, Rogart, Rosehall and Shin Falls Centre. These are great fun and a good way to meet people as well as maybe learn a new dance or two and usually include a good tea with baking.
There are local world class Pipe Bands which play at local events as well as parading in villages throughout the summer months and are truly a spectacle to watch with the haunting drones of the pipes and the intense beat of the drums whilst clad in traditional tartan.
Sutherland also hosts a local Mod in June each year where competitors enter into traditional music, song, poetry and writing competitions. Spectators are welcome and the evening is rounded off with a prize winners’ Ceilidh. Lairg also hosts a Traditional Music Festival in mid June with local talent from far and wide entering the many competitions and also entertaining at the much looked forward to Ceilidh in the evening.
In addition there is the local Feis movement which children can join to learn music from tutors in classes throughout a weekend or a week long event which are run throughout the year – booking is essential as they soon fill up. Golspie hosts the Feis for the first week in July and children up to 18 attend from all over the World.
Local Hotels and bars including the Crask Inn near Lairg also offer a chance to hear music in an informal setting and wherever you are in Sutherland at whatever time of year there will be music somewhere for you to enjoy.
